2011 was an exciting year for Australian television and radio. Here’s a snapshot of the 2011 results.
FREE TO AIR TELEVISION
National Metro
- Overall (national metro), Seven (7) was the big ratings winner for 2011, winning every week of survey this year and enjoying its best ever total people share (apart from the Olympics year) with a 31.0 share.
- Nine (9) was number 2, posting its lowest share, 26.4, in 21 years.
- Ten (10) was number 3 with a 21.4 share – very similar to its average over the last 20 years.
- 2 averaged a 15.8 share – its lowest since 2006.
- SBS had a 5.4 share, also its lowest since 2006; however, their best year was 2005 with a 6.1 share, so only 0.7 points under its best year’s showing.
Market By Market
- SYDNEY – 7 & 9 battled for #1 position with 7 (29.3 share) edging out 9 (28.1 share) by 1.2 points.
- MELBOURNE – 7 finished 4 points ahead of 9.
- ADELAIDE – 7 won the market 9.3 points ahead of 9.
- BRISBANE – 7 narrowly won the market over 9 by only 2 points.
- PERTH – Always a strong market for 7, it finished 11.8 points ahead of 9.
DIGITAL TELEVISION
All 3 networks posted very close results across their digital channels. On the digital front:
- 7Two was the strongest with a 4.6 share across metro markets.
- GO! was the next best with 4.0.
- Eleven – only launched in January 2011 – a good 3rd place with a network share of 3.5.
RADIO
Market By Market
SYDNEY
- 2GB again won every week of the survey to put it in the no. 1 overall spot for all people 10+, achieving a 14.2 share in survey 8.
- 2DAYFM started the year with a 10.4 share (no. 2 overall, but no. 1 FM station) and ended the year with a slight share loss (9.9 share) and remained no. 2 overall and no. 1 FM station.
- WSFM, UE, MMM and Nova all showed share increases in 2011.
- MIX and Classic Rock showed a slight share loss at the end of the year.
- 2CH started the year with a 5.5 share and finished the year with the same share.
MELBOURNE
- 3AW is still the no. 1 station in the market with a 13.6 share in survey 8, down from a 15 share at the beginning of 2011.
- MTR 1377 wasn’t able to diminish 3AW’s loyal following within the market, but finished the year with a 2.1 share – up from 1.9 in the previous survey.
- FOXFM lost share in the final survey slipping by 1.5 share points since survey 1.
- GOLD (no. 3 overall), like its Sydney station WSFM, had a good year as did MMM.
- 3AW and Magic continue to be the best combination for reaching the all important 55 plus audience
BRISBANE
- There was no survey 1 released due to the floods – however, survey 2 saw B105 at the top with a 11.8 share and Nova next up with a 11.7 share.
- By the end of the year with survey 8, it was a very close race with 97.3FM the overall winner (11.7 share), Nova in second place with an 11.4 share, B105 a very close third place finish of 11.3 share, followed by MMM with a 11.1%.
- In terms of demographics, MMM is no. 1 with 40–54, B105 is no. 1 with 10-17 – a huge 37.4 share, Nova is no. 1 with 25-39, 4KQ has the 55-64 and BH owns the 65 plus market.
ADELAIDE
- At survey 1, the results in the market were:

6. Cruise - By survey 8, the rankings changed as follows:
1. MIX 102.3 (15.7 share)
2. 5AA (no. 1 with the 55 plus audience)

PERTH
- MIX 94.5 is still no. 1 with a 15.1 share at the end of the year – down only 0.1 point from survey 1.
- 92.2 also stayed consistent with a 12.6 share and the no. 2 spot in the market.
- 6PR and Nova show an increase in share.
- 6IX, 96FM showed a small share drop(only 0.1 point)
