Record-breaking success

Two days after closing its doors, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs has cemented its position as the most successful touring exhibition in Australian history with a record 796,277 visitors.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs previously set a record when it opened at Melbourne Museum on 8 April with 150,000 pre-sold tickets. Four months into its almost eight month run, the exhibition exceeded attendance figures for all Australian exhibitions that have come before it by reaching 500,000.

The exhibition closed on Sunday 4 December at 10pm and reached a staggering 796,277 visitors. 94,860 of these were school children and community groups and a remarkable 41% were from interstate or overseas.

Louise Asher, Minister for Tourism and Major Events said the exhibition had been a stunning triumph, drawing local, national and international visitors of all ages to Melbourne.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs has not only provided Victorians with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the treasures of the boy king in their own Melbourne Museum, but has also attracted more than 326,000 interstate and international visitors (41 percent of attendees), driving outstanding tourism and economic benefits for Victoria,” Ms Asher said.

Reaching 796,277 visitors ranks the exhibition significantly higher than any previous exhibition in Australia including Melbourne Museum’s A Day in Pompeii in 2009 which attracted 332,679 people and Titanic the Artefact exhibition in 2010 which reached 480,879 in its six-month run. Interstate the highest attended exhibition had been the National Gallery of Australia’s Masterpieces from Paris, which recorded attendances of 476,000.

ACMN is proud to have been a part of this landmark event. We congratulate all those involved including IMG Arts & Entertainment, the Victorian Government, Victorian Major Events Company, Arts Victoria, Melbourne Museum and all the sponsors of the exhibition. We look forward to working with you all again in the future.
